This week saw the fulfilment of a lifelong dream for me as I launched my first (and perhaps only) officially published book. ‘Trading Places: From Hopelessness to Happiness’ is now available to buy and I am thrilled to bits.
Achieving this milestone with God’s help is something I have wanted to do ever since my headmistress at Primary School watched me compose ‘stories’ on a little typewriter and uttered the words: “You will be a great journalist one day, Joseph.” To describe my literary efforts as ‘great’ may have be an overstatement. However, I have been fortunate enough to work as a newspaper reporter and latterly an online journalist for over 20 years. To now see a bona fide book bearing my name and photo on the front cover is the icing on the cake.
I praise God for allowing me to fulfil this and many other life goals. I have indeed been blessed throughout my adult life. However, if you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour the Bible says that good gift you receive in this life will pale into insignificance when you reach Heaven.
In 1 Corinthians 2:9, we are told that: ‘“But, as it is written, What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.” (ESV)
The opening verses of Revelation 21 reveal a little more of what God’s people can look forward to. In verse three we are told that: ‘God’s dwelling place’ will be with his people. That’s right, we will see the God of all creation face to face every day for all eternity. We will converse with him in the same way that we do with family, friends or colleagues right now. What a privilege!
Heaven will also be characterised by an absence of pain, suffering or any of the agonies we experience in our present existence. Outlining more blessings that await his people there, the next verse states: 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (NIV)
God’s full authority will be clearly on display. ‘It is done’ he declares in Revelation 21:6, ‘the Alpha and the Omega’ and giver of eternal life has spoken. Verse 8 reveals that the devil and all his wickedness will have been dispatched to the ‘fiery lake of burning sulphur, which is the second death.’ Satan will have no means or power to affect Heaven. It will be paradise in every sense of the word.
I am really enjoying my life right now, doing the job I love with friends, family and a wonderful wife at my side. Although the joy of Heaven will take my happiness to a whole new level. I might not be called to see it just yet, but my anticipation grows and when that time comes, I look forward to getting there……..eventually!
